How does a sleep cycle calculator work?

How a sleep cycle calculator works — a brain and a clock connected by a data flow with sleep wave patterns

A sleep cycle calculator usually works backward from your desired wake-up time or forward from your planned bedtime. It divides the available sleep period into estimated cycles, often using 90 minutes as a convenient average. Many calculators also add approximately 10 to 20 minutes for falling asleep. For example, if you want to wake at 7:00 a.m., the calculator may suggest several possible bedtimes that allow four, five or six estimated cycles. However, real cycles are not always exactly 90 minutes and can change throughout the night. A calculator cannot know when you enter deep or REM sleep. It is best used to organize a schedule while prioritizing enough total sleep and consistent timing.
